A female visitor was arrested on Monday for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The suspect, identified only as Mrs Iyabo, was taken into custody at the facility. Authorities at the custodial centre have not released further details about the incident.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining security within correctional facilities. It also echoes recent efforts by Nigerian agencies to crack down on drug trafficking, such as the NDLEA's interception of cocaine hidden in a mortar and backpack destined for China and Italy.
Why this matters
Drug smuggling into prisons undermines rehabilitation efforts and poses a security risk. This arrest shows that vigilance at custodial centres remains critical, and it serves as a reminder of the broader fight against drug trafficking in Nigeria.
